Herb of the Month

Lavender

Lavandula angustifolia
Lavender, with its silver foliage and haze of violet-blue flowers, is the very picture of a summer garden — and one of the most beloved herbs on earth. Known botanically as Lavandula angustifolia, it takes its name from the Latin lavare, "to wash," for the Romans perfumed their baths and laundry with it. Native to the sun-baked hillsides of the Mediterranean, lavender asks for little but light and sharp drainage, repaying it with fragrance that fills a whole garden.
